On this site you may explore the work of urban landscape painter Crystal Moll while keeping up with the exhibitions and events at the Crystal Moll Gallery.
Crystal Moll uses the streets scenes of Baltimore as her studio. Her interests finds her in urban settings painting strictly on location for over 20 years. Crystal works on several paintings at a time, moving locations with the sun, to capture the light and shadow of each scene at its optimum time of day. Painting on location gives her work the feel of “being there,” allowing the viewer to enter the scene, look in the windows, and acquire a sense of place and time.
A blend of impressionism and realism, her paintings have a pleasing painterly quality of traditional oils with an intriguing color sense that is Crystal’s own. Her work has been compared with that of Edward Hopper, but with a happier, brighter tone.
Most paintings require between 2-12 visits to complete. Because of this she participates in only a couple of plein air events each year (limited painting time of 2-6 days), preferring to work at her own ‘slow’ pace.
Crystal Moll Gallery opened in 2009 in the Baltimore neighborhood of Federal Hill in 2009. Which is located just south of the Harbor. This area has provided many subjects of her work. She uses this ‘main street’ space to showcase not just her work but the work of many regional artists with an emphasis on plein air painting. In additional to Crystal’s oils, prints, cards, necklaces, and art tiles of her work are available at the gallery. The gallery has been voted one of Baltimore’s Best Galleries in Baltimore Magazines readers poll in 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017!
